How to Ease Tooth Sensitivity in Young Children

The main reason for sensitive teeth is that the enamel of baby teeth isn't as hard and durable as adult teeth. Normally this doesn't matter because the teeth fall out, but if your child is throwing a tantrum because of painful, sensitive teeth, that's not much consolation. Here are our top tips for easing the pain caused by sensitive teeth.

Use a Soft-Bristled Toothbrush, Gently

One of the first culprits for tooth sensitivity actually protects against it, normally: brushing. Daily brushing and flossing are critical to preventing cavities and maintaining a healthy smile, but using a toothbrush with firm bristles or brushing too hard can both contribute to tooth sensitivity. If your child's teeth are sensitive, try switching to a soft-bristled toothbrush, and make sure that you or your child are brushing the teeth softly and not applying too much pressure. For added relief, try switching to a toothpaste formulated for tooth sensitivity.

Boost Dairy Intake

Low-fat cheese, milk, and yogurt all contain a number of minerals that can help bolster the strength of teeth, but two of the most important minerals for your teeth are casein and calcium. Calcium reinforces the structural integrity of teeth, while casein can help strengthen your enamel, the "shield" of your teeth, preventing sensitivity. Try incorporating some low-fat cheese or Greek yogurt into your child's diet to help give them the nutrients they need for strong teeth.

Avoid Acids & Sugars

Sugary foods should always be avoided as they contribute to dental decay, which can cause both tooth sensitivity and cavities. But acidic foods and drinks are important to avoid too. Acid is corrosive to teeth, slowly wearing down the protective enamel and exposing sensitive dentin underneath. If your child is experiencing tooth sensitivity, take a look at their diet and cut back on anything that might be supplying lots of acid or sugar – things like sodas, some sports drinks, citrus fruits, and many candies (particularly sour ones). Instead, substitute them for healthy, tooth-strengthening foods like low-fat dairy and soft vegetables.
